Healthcare innovation in France is extending across the patient journey. Clinicians need clearer information, easier coordination and tools that fit into everyday practice. At the same time, researchers are building treatments for diseases where current care leaves significant needs unmet.

The seven startups reflect both directions. Some are working to make prescribing, follow-up and diagnosis more usable or precise. Others are developing surgery-enabling technology or medicines aimed at difficult therapeutic problems. Together, they show how French health innovation combines care delivery with advances rooted in engineering, medicine and academic research.

Why AppThera stands out

AppThera already has a foothold in clinical practice. Coverage in 2025 recorded more than 5,000 patients followed and 1,500 physicians using its service, including 1,000 general practitioners. That places its model within an existing prescribing workflow rather than solely in a consumer app market.

Partnerships with Agora Health and Novo Nordisk have brought additional digital-treatment options into French prescribing, including obesity care. Co-founders Stéphane Tholander and Mikaly Rodriguez-Ruiz also bring previous startup-building experience from Labs Explorer, acquired by Scientist.com.

What AppThera is building

AppThera gives clinicians a way to select and prescribe , software-based treatments supported by clinical evidence. Its service combines a therapy directory, patient onboarding and prescription tracking so treatment can sit alongside conventional care.

By linking eligible digital therapies to medical professionals and their patients, the platform addresses a practical obstacle in digital health: getting an appropriate treatment into use and keeping it connected to follow-up.

Why Audya stands out

Audya was developed by two ear, nose and throat surgeons, Arnaud Devèze and Éric Truy, whose experience in hearing care informs the need for continuity between hospitals and community professionals. An initial pilot in the department at CHU de Nice allowed participants to share patient records and messages.

A partnership with GN gave hearing-care professionals access to the platform on preferential terms, providing an early channel into established professional networks. Audya also joined the Prevent2Care support programme.

What Audya is building

Audya brings audiograms, device histories, questionnaires and secure communication together in a shared digital hearing-health record. Patients and the professionals responsible for their hearing care can work from the same information over time.

The platform is designed for people using hearing aids or cochlear implants, whose care often spans different providers. Keeping follow-up information connected makes it easier to review device benefit, plan appointments and coordinate decisions.

Why Awoken stands out

Awoken is working with Hospices Civils de Lyon on paediatric sleep research. The hospital’s aw-DREAM study identifies the startup as the software partner for developing and evaluating algorithms on existing sleep recordings. The partnership gives its technology a defined research setting and specialist clinical input.

The startup was also recognised in several early-stage innovation competitions, including the 2025 Bref Eco Innovation Trophies. Its main differentiator remains the focus on a specific clinical task that can consume substantial specialist time.

What Awoken is building

Awoken develops AI software that annotates breathing events in sleep-study recordings, supporting clinicians who assess . Specialists can review and correct the suggested scoring before exporting a report and structured results.

Sleep studies capture hours of physiological data. Automating the first pass through those recordings could make interpretation more efficient while keeping clinical oversight in the assessment process.

Why AstraNICE stands out

AstraNICE grew from CNRS and University of Strasbourg bioimaging research, with SATT Conectus supporting the technology’s commercial development. Published work demonstrated visibility of coated devices in porcine and human cadaver models, providing evidence directly relevant to the intended surgical use.

Its team combines materials science with clinical expertise. Co-founder Andrey Klymchenko researches fluorescent probes, while surgeon-scientist Michele Diana works on new surgical technologies. Early support has also included Bpifrance and incubation at Quest for Health.

What AstraNICE is building

AstraNICE is developing a near-infrared fluorescent coating that can be applied to surgical instruments, including clips and catheters. Under , the treated equipment becomes easier to locate through tissue during minimally invasive procedures. The technology is intended for surgical-equipment manufacturers, offering a way to add visibility to existing tools rather than requiring an entirely different class of instrument.

Why Aken Medical stands out

Aken Medical won a 2025 i-Lab Grand Prize for its approach to combining cancer treatment and imaging. Its research network includes CNRS, Inserm, the University of Montpellier and Montpellier Cancer Institute, bringing expertise from nanomaterials through to oncology. The startup has also received non-dilutive backing associated with Bpifrance and France 2030. Co-founder Tijani Gharbi adds long experience in nanotechnology, supporting the technical foundation of the treatment platform.

What Aken Medical is building

Aken Medical is developing designed to carry radioactive treatment and imaging isotopes to tumours. The goal is to concentrate radiation at the cancer site and track its delivery in the same approach. Its preclinical work focuses initially on pancreatic and ovarian cancer, where a more targeted distribution of radiation could be useful. The platform brings imaging and therapy together in a single injectable system.

Why Apateya stands out

Apateya emerged from Bordeaux’s Institut des Maladies Neurodégénératives, connecting the founders’ neuroscience research directly to the treatment of chronic nerve-related pain. Its lead compound series has shown proof of concept and efficacy in multiple animal models, establishing an early preclinical basis for the programme.

The startup joined Bpifrance’s Deeptech Seed accelerator in 2026 and was selected for the Bordeaux Care Lab health-incubation programme. Co-founder Franck Aby’s research background in pain sensitisation is closely linked to the therapeutic work.

What Apateya is building

Apateya develops a series of non-opioid compounds intended to strengthen the nervous system’s own mechanisms for limiting pain signals. The initial target is , which can persist after nerve damage.

Its approach focuses on restoring inhibitory signalling in the spinal cord rather than using opioid medicines. The programme remains in preclinical development, building on its early disease-model results.

Why ApoRepair stands out

ApoRepair comes from research on protecting the heart during restoration of blood flow after a heart attack. Eurobiomed describes animal-model results showing a reduced area of injured heart muscle and protection lasting six months in mice. These findings support the preclinical rationale for the therapeutic programme.

The startup has a research collaboration with the Institute of Functional Genomics and received early Bpifrance support. Its founders combine cardioprotection, -delivery science and cardiovascular research, and the project was recognised in the 2024 i-Lab competition.

What ApoRepair is building

ApoRepair is developing APO-29, an injectable therapeutic peptide intended to protect heart muscle when a blocked artery is reopened during emergency heart-attack treatment. Restoring blood flow is essential, but the process can also cause further injury to cardiac cells. Designed as an addition to established emergency care, the peptide aims to limit that secondary damage and preserve more functioning heart tissue after the acute event.

Deal Sourcing for Investors

Looking for More Startups Like These?

DealBio helps investment teams discover, research, and monitor early-stage healthcare and life sciences startups aligned with their investment criteria.

Investment perspective

This group illustrates the range of problems French health startups are choosing to address. Across clinical software and medical devices, the opportunity often begins with a task that already happens every day: selecting a treatment, coordinating follow-up, reading a recording or locating equipment during a procedure. New technology can have a clear route into practice when it improves one of those established tasks.

The therapeutic programmes reflect another strength: research teams developing specific ways to intervene in disease. Targeted radiation, non-opioid pain medicines and cardiac-protective peptides involve different biology, but each starts with a defined clinical problem and a treatment mechanism that can be tested in preclinical development.

Academic research, specialist clinicians and support organisations feature across the seven startups. The most meaningful early progress is where that foundation has already led to a working clinical collaboration, a product used in a care setting or a therapeutic candidate backed by relevant experimental evidence. Together, they show that French health innovation is being shaped by the interaction of research capability and practical healthcare needs.

Methodology

DealBio selected these seven early-stage French health startups for their distinct approaches across digital care, diagnosis, surgical technology and therapeutics.
