3 Early-Stage Diabetes Startups Building New Tools for Monitoring and Treatment
DealBio tracks early-stage diabetes startups across Europe and North America. These 3 are building tools around daily glucose decisions, insulin quality and diabetic wound healing.

- Chronic Care
Diabetes care depends on repeated decisions and reliable treatment over long periods. The [World Health Organization](https://www.who.int/health-topics/diabetes) reports that about 830 million people worldwide live with diabetes, while insulin remains essential for people with type 1 diabetes and some people with type 2 diabetes.type 1 diabetesWorld Health Organization
That creates opportunities beyond new medicines. Better forecasting can help people anticipate glucose changes, point-of-care testing can make insulin quality measurable before use, and active wound technologies can address a serious complication of diabetes.
The three startups below enter diabetes care at different points, but each is trying to make an existing care task more informative or more active: predicting what may happen next, checking whether treatment remains usable, or helping a difficult wound close.

Why Bioinspired Intelligence stands out
Bioinspired Intelligence has moved its glucose-forecasting software into randomized clinical evaluation for adults with type 1 diabetes. The glUCModel study began in July 2025 and targets 34 adults using insulin injections, evaluating glucose control and app usability.
The technology also has a long academic development path. All three founders are named on a published glucose-prediction patent application assigned to Complutense University of Madrid and the University of Extremadura, while glUCModel originated in eight funded diabetes-research projects with nearly €1 million in combined funding.
What Bioinspired Intelligence is building
glUCModel is a mobile application that uses AI-based models to forecast glucose changes up to two hours ahead. Continuous glucose monitoring, a sensor-based method that repeatedly measures glucose throughout the day and night, is used in the clinical-study workflow to build personalized models.
The application combines those forecasts with configurable warnings and insulin-dose recommendations. Its decision-support layer is designed for people using multiple daily injections, helping them anticipate low or high glucose and use that information alongside their usual diabetes care.

Why Bioelectrix stands out
Bioelectrix is applying bioelectronics to diabetic foot ulcers, open wounds on the foot that can develop in people with diabetes and become difficult to heal. Founders co-authored a 2023 study in which direct current increased wound-gap closure nearly threefold in healthy and diabetic-like skin-cell models compared with unstimulated controls.
The startup is also building an IP and commercialization base around the technology. Bioelectrix is listed as applicant on an international patent application covering a wound dressing that combines electrical stimulation and measurements with adaptive control, and Chalmers Ventures added the startup to its portfolio in 2025.
What Bioelectrix is building
Bioelectrix is developing wound electrodes that deliver controlled direct current to support wound healing, the biological process through which damaged tissue repairs and closes. The electrical field is intended to guide skin-cell migration across the wound.
The electrodes use laser-induced graphene, a conductive carbon material patterned with a laser, coated with a conducting polymer that carries electrical charge. Later versions are intended to add impedance, pH and temperature measurements so clinicians can monitor wound conditions as well as stimulate repair.

Why Beyond Diagnostics stands out
Beyond Diagnostics is addressing insulin quality at the point of use. The startup is part of a CHF659,000 Innosuisse-supported R&D project with CSEM to develop point-of-care testing for insulin and medication quality, and Venture Kick lists a first functional insulin-activity prototype as completed in February 2026.
The work originated at Diabetes Center Berne’s INSPIRE Lab. Founder Maren Schinz previously built a diabetes startup that reached more than 2,000 customers in its first year and led the Insulin Activity Project before spinning the work into Beyond Diagnostics.
What Beyond Diagnostics is building
LUMIQ is a point-of-care test, a diagnostic designed to produce a result near the patient rather than in a central laboratory, that estimates remaining insulin activity before injection. Insulin activity describes how much biological effect the insulin can still produce after storage and handling.
A small insulin sample is applied to a lateral-flow test, a strip-based format in which a liquid sample moves across a membrane to generate a visible signal. The strip is photographed with a smartphone, and AI-supported image analysis converts the optical signal into an estimate of remaining insulin activity and a simple usability indication.
Deal Sourcing for Investors
Looking for More Startups Like These?
DealBio helps investment teams discover, research, and monitor early-stage healthcare and life sciences startups aligned with their investment criteria.
Investment perspective
These startups show how diabetes innovation can create value around the treatment itself, not only through new drugs or delivery devices. Bioinspired Intelligence adds prediction to glucose data, Beyond Diagnostics adds a direct quality check before insulin use, and Bioelectrix brings active electrical stimulation into wound care.
For investors, the useful comparison is the proof each model needs next. Clinical decision software has to show that forecasts and recommendations improve day-to-day management. A point-of-care insulin test needs reliable analytical performance in a simple user workflow. An active wound device has to translate strong laboratory evidence into practical clinical healing outcomes. Each startup therefore enters an established diabetes-care pathway with a different validation route and buyer context.
Methodology
DealBio selected these three early-stage startups because each addresses a distinct part of diabetes monitoring or treatment. The selection spans glucose forecasting and insulin decision support, direct testing of insulin activity before use, and active treatment for diabetic foot ulcers.glucose forecasting
