Developing AI software to forecast glucose and support insulin-dosing decisions

DiabetesChronic CareClinical Decision Support

People using insulin make repeated decisions about doses, meals and activity while glucose levels can change quickly. Reacting only after glucose becomes too high or too low can make daily management difficult. Predictive support could help patients and clinicians anticipate changes and plan timely responses.

Bioinspired Intelligence is developing glUCModel to help people with diabetes anticipate glucose changes and make informed insulin decisions. Personalized forecasts and early alerts are intended to support daily management alongside existing treatment and clinical care.

Key Investor Signals

Entered randomized clinical evaluation for type 1 diabetes

The glUCModel study began in July 2025, with Bioinspired Intelligence as a collaborator. It targets 34 adults using insulin injections and evaluates glucose control and app usability.

Co-invented glucose-forecasting patent technology

All three founders are named on US20250107729A1, a published application for glucose prediction and alerts assigned to Complutense and Extremadura universities.

Built on eight funded diabetes-research projects

glUCModel originated in eight competitive national and regional research projects with nearly €1M in combined funding, supporting the technology before company formation.

José Manuel Velasco

Co-founder

  • Taught and researched at Complutense University of Madrid from 2000, building a long academic background in computing.
  • Earned a doctorate in computer engineering with a distinction in 2010, following training in physics and communications.
  • Co-authored 2022 research on mood, stress and glucose variability in people with using glucose sensors.

Product

glUCModel uses AI-based glucose models in a mobile application that combines glucose forecasts, configurable warnings and insulin-dose recommendations. In its clinical study, data are used to build personalized models while participants continue their usual insulin injections.

Personalized glucose forecasts

General and personalized models forecast glucose changes up to two hours ahead. The clinical-study workflow uses an initial period of continuous glucose monitoring to develop individual predictions for the intervention group.

Configurable early warnings

The application provides predictive alerts for glucose levels that may become too low or too high. Users can adjust warning settings and view forecasts to support discussions and decisions about their diabetes care.

Insulin decision support

glUCModel combines dose recommendations with glucose information to support people using multiple daily injections. The clinical trial evaluates the app alongside usual care and measures time in target glucose range, usability and treatment satisfaction.

Market Overview

Digital diabetes management combines connected monitoring devices, insulin-delivery systems, software and care services. Software turns glucose data into information for patients and diabetes teams. Health systems, insurers, device manufacturers and individuals purchase different parts of this connected-care ecosystem.

Device purchases currently dominate category spending, but software supports recurring services, data interpretation and clinical workflows. App developers compete through interoperability, usable recommendations and evidence that informs payer and provider decisions. The figures below describe this broader connected-care category.

Connected diabetes-care revenue
$20.2B

Global digital diabetes-management revenue, including devices and services, was estimated at $20.2B in 2025.

Hardware’s share of category spending
91.5%

Device hardware accounted for an estimated 91.5% of global digital diabetes-management revenue in 2025.

Diabetes software and app growth
19.0%

Digital diabetes-management software and app revenue is forecast to grow 19.0% annually from 2026 to 2035.

Type 1 share of connected-care revenue
41.4%

Type 1 diabetes represented an estimated 41.4% of global digital diabetes-management revenue in 2025.
