Inside the Nordic Health Pipeline: 5 BioInnovation Institute Startups
DealBio tracks early-stage health startups across Europe and North America. These 5 show the range of technologies moving through Copenhagen-based BioInnovation Institute’s Venture Lab.
- Nordics
- BioInnovation Institute
- Venture Building
- Biotech
- Medtech
BioInnovation Institute combines early financing with venture-building support for research-heavy startups. That makes its pipeline useful for seeing which technologies are moving from academic or technical origin into newly formed companies before larger institutional rounds.
The five startups below span emergency ventilation, engineered heart tissue, kidney diagnostics, brain delivery and engineered probiotics, showing how broad the Nordic health pipeline has become.

Why Anorit Medical stands out
Anorit Medical came out of the BioMedical Design Novo Nordisk Foundation Fellowship Programme, where the founding team identified bystander ventilation as a gap in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest care.
The startup has joined BioInnovation Institute’s Venture Lab with €500,000 in financing and secured a DKK 4.7 million grant. Prototype testing with more than 40 first-aid instructors reported high usability and confidence scores.
What Anorit Medical is building
Anorit Medical is developing a reusable ventilation device that a bystander places over the patient’s mouth. Pressing one button automatically delivers a controlled volume of air.
Only the patient-contact components are intended to be replaced after use, creating a device model designed for public-access emergency settings rather than trained clinical operators.

Why Ibnova Therapeutics stands out
Ibnova Therapeutics entered BioInnovation Institute’s Venture Lab with up to €500,000 in financing. Its founding research has restored heart function in animal models, while co-founder James Hudson contributed to earlier cardiac-patch work that reached a Phase 1/2 trial.
The startup is also working with the Novo Nordisk Foundation Cellerator on process development and scale-up, adding manufacturing support early in the translation of a complex cell therapy.
What Ibnova Therapeutics is building
Ibnova Therapeutics grows vascularized human heart-muscle patches from stem cells. The patch combines cardiomyocytes with vascular cells and is designed to be attached over damaged myocardium after a heart attack.
The product is intended to be allogeneic, made from donor cells for use in multiple patients, and available off the shelf, with the aim of replacing lost heart muscle rather than only managing heart-failure symptoms.

Why Equilibrium Diagnostics stands out
Equilibrium Diagnostics joined BioInnovation Institute’s Venture Lab with DKK 4.2 million in convertible financing. The underlying urine Ammonium-pH Index has added prognostic information across multiple kidney-disease cohorts.
The startup is built on Aarhus University technology covered by patent applications for the urine analyzer and its use in predicting kidney-disease progression.
What Equilibrium Diagnostics is building
The AP Reader measures urinary ammonium and pH from one sample, and software combines them into the urine Ammonium-pH Index. The score is designed to capture tubular acid-handling function that routine filtration markers do not measure directly.
The near-term use is risk stratification: identifying chronic-kidney-disease patients who may need closer monitoring or earlier specialist care.
Developing a brain shuttle for systemic delivery of therapeutics into the brain.

Why Cerentry Bio stands out
Cerentry Bio brings repeat-founder experience into a difficult drug-delivery problem. Co-founder Mette Rosenkilde previously co-founded multiple biotech startups, including Antag Therapeutics and Synklino.
The startup joined BioInnovation Institute’s Venture Lab with €500,000 in convertible financing, and its founders are named on a 2022 patent covering the underlying brain-delivery approach.
What Cerentry Bio is building
Cerentry Bio is developing a brain shuttle that uses receptor-mediated transport at the choroid plexus, the tissue interface between blood and cerebrospinal fluid, to move systemically administered therapeutics into the brain.
The approach is intended to preserve convenient systemic dosing while expanding which biologic drug formats can reach central-nervous-system targets.

Why 1stBiome stands out
1stBiome entered BioInnovation Institute’s Venture Lab with €500,000 in financing. Its founding team also brings unusually deep repeat-founder experience: Morten Sommer previously co-founded Microlytic, acquired by Anatrace in 2015, while Ejner Bech Jensen previously co-founded Agrobiomics and led it through a €4 million seed round.
The startup grew out of DTU Biosustain research and has preclinical evidence supporting metabolic effects from its engineered probiotic platform.
What 1stBiome is building
1stBiome engineers beneficial gut microbes to reduce low-grade inflammation and influence metabolic signalling. Its lead work uses Saccharomyces boulardii, a probiotic yeast with established gastrointestinal use, as an engineering chassis.
The startup plans a partner-led commercial model, developing oral nutritional products for metabolic health, weight management and healthy ageing through established consumer-health and nutrition brands.

BII is supporting companies before their categories converge
The five startups share an ecosystem but not a technology stack. Their needs range from medical-device usability and manufacturing to cell-therapy scale-up, diagnostic validation, brain delivery and engineered microbial products.
That diversity is the point of the pipeline. BII’s role appears early, when scientific teams are still translating technical assets into companies, and before later investors can evaluate them on the more conventional milestones of clinical data, manufacturing readiness and commercial traction.
Methodology
DealBio selected these startups from its coverage of early-stage health and longevity startups, focusing on Nordic ventures that entered BioInnovation Institute’s Venture Lab and represent materially different health-technology categories. The selection spans medtech, cell therapy, diagnostics, drug delivery and microbiome engineering.
DealBio builds its Startup Briefs using publicly available startup materials, ecosystem sources, market references and professional profiles.
