Developing simulation software to predict dental implant stability before surgery
Dental implant success depends partly on how firmly an implant initially anchors in the jawbone. Dentists must estimate this stability before surgery from images and experience. Uncertainty can complicate decisions about implant placement and when to load the implant, increasing the risk of complications and repeat treatment.
IMPLANZ is developing software that combines 3D scans with computer simulation to predict dental implant stability. It aims to help dentists compare patient-specific treatment options before surgery while working within their existing planning systems.
What stands out about IMPLANZ
IMPLANZ’s simulation software is used by implant manufacturers to develop new dental implants.
Founder-linked CBCT simulations predicted implant failure load with R²=0.66 versus 0.39 for bone density in 23 cadaveric implants.
Founder-led micro-CT models predicted failure force with R²=0.85 in 22 jawbone samples, versus 0.50 for torque and 0.38 for resonance tests.
Co-founder Christoph Rickert previously co-founded yband therapy, which Tyromotion acquired with its movement-tracker assets in July 2020.
IMPLANZ spun out of the University of Bern’s ARTORG Center, originating in its Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Group.
IMPLANZ and ARTORG received an Innosuisse Innovation Project Grant for Image-to-Decision Intelligence for Implant Surgery in March 2026.
Bern approved CHF 100,000 of startup support for IMPLANZ in conditional tranches, following an earlier CHF 30,000 contribution.
IMPLANZ is the implementation partner in a dental implant-planning project with ARTORG’s biomechanics group and ZMK Bern.
IMPLANZ partnered with epmodex in August 2025 on calibration-device development, design controls and manufacturing preparation.
