Developing brainwave-timed sound stimulation to enhance deep sleep

Sleep MedicineNeurotechWearables

disrupts sleep and daytime functioning, while aging can weaken the slow brain rhythms associated with deep sleep. Sleep trackers help people observe their nights, but monitoring alone does not actively strengthen these rhythms or resolve persistent sleep difficulties.

Deep Sleep Technologies is developing gentle sound stimulation timed to each sleeper’s brain activity. The approach aims to deepen restorative sleep and is being developed for use at home through compatible consumer devices.

Key Investor Signals

Raised €2M to develop brainwave-guided sleep technology

Strategic angel investors backed the April 2025 round to advance product development, clinical validation and integration of the stimulation platform into consumer devices.

Demonstrated stronger slow-wave activity in a headband study

A 2025 preprint found higher slow-wave power with sound stimulation than in silent control periods. The single-night study enrolled 26 healthy adults; 14 remained in the brainwave-power analysis.

Secured a US patent for predictive brain stimulation

US patent 12,310,739 was granted in May 2025, naming Deep Sleep Technologies and the University of Amsterdam as assignees for technology that predicts and influences biological signals.

Product

The platform combines brainwave recordings with : software predicts the next part of a sleep rhythm and times a sound pulse to it. A research headband has been tested in the laboratory, with home use and consumer-device integration under development.

Reading sleep brainwaves

Forehead electrodes capture the brain’s electrical activity during sleep. The research setup uses a self-applied EEG headband, giving the software a live signal from which to identify and target slow sleep rhythms.

Timing gentle sound pulses

The algorithm models incoming brainwave signals to predict in real time. It triggers acoustic pulses at a chosen point in each rhythm, adapting to the sleeper without a separate individual calibration session.

Connecting to compatible hardware

The stimulation software connects to compatible EEG hardware. In the research setup, a wireless receiver sends headband recordings to a computer that runs the algorithm and controls acoustic stimulation.

Market Overview

Consumer sleep technology spans passive tracking and devices that actively intervene during sleep. People buy these products to understand poor sleep and seek better rest. Brainwave-guided sound stimulation sits in the active-intervention segment, alongside other non-drug sleep aids sold for home use.

Consumers purchase sleep headbands directly, with some suppliers adding subscription services. Device brands are also potential buyers of stimulation software for integration into their own hardware. The category combines one-off hardware purchases with recurring digital services for sleep support.

Dreem

R&D business acquired by Beacon Biosignals in 2023

Dreem developed at-home EEG headbands for sleep monitoring and studied closed-loop sound stimulation to enhance slow sleep waves. Its later clinical hardware supported sleep assessments in drug trials. Beacon Biosignals completed the acquisition of Dreem’s research and development business in July 2023, combining the headband technology with its EEG analytics platform.
