Developing a smart-textile belt for home monitoring of high-risk pregnancies

Women's HealthPregnancyVirtual Care

High-risk pregnancies need repeated checks on the health of both mother and fetus. Hospital-based monitoring can require frequent travel and supervised appointments, making surveillance disruptive for families and placing additional demands on maternity teams.

CHD is developing MONI2 to let clinicians monitor high-risk pregnancies while women remain at home. Its connected belt and digital services are designed to support closer surveillance during daily life, with medical decisions kept under professional oversight.

Key Investor Signals

Secured CHF 40,000 through Venture Kick Stage II

Swiss startup programme awarded CHF 40,000 to advance MONI2 prototypes and algorithms. CHD also signed a agreement as part of its Stage II support.

Secured early letters of intent for MONI2

Early engagement with potential customers and partners generated letters of intent and feedback on the belt, app and platform, supporting development of CHD’s home pregnancy-monitoring system.

Signed a maternal-fetal data agreement in Lille

CHD signed an agreement with , the Lille hospital and university research partnership, for anonymized maternal and fetal cardiac signals to develop and validate predictive pregnancy indicators.

Other Positive Signals

  • Built an initial proof of concept for collecting maternal and fetal signals during home monitoring.
  • Selected for Biopôle’s six-month Vanguard Accelerator for digital health ventures.

Product

MONI2 combines a washable smart-textile belt with a patient app and a clinician web platform. The system under development collects maternal and fetal signals and is intended to support remote assessment of pregnancy risk under clinician supervision.

Abdominal electrical sensing

Dry sensors distributed across the abdomen are designed to collect maternal and fetal signals, contractions and fetal movements. The textile belt is intended for comfortable use during everyday activities.

Separate patient and clinician views

The patient app is designed to provide simplified information, while clinicians access detailed medical data through a secure web platform. Healthcare professionals determine when and how long monitoring should take place.

Predictive pregnancy indicators

Algorithms under development aim to identify warning signs of pregnancy complications, including preterm birth. An agreement with Lille researchers provides access to anonymized maternal and fetal cardiac signals for this work.

Market Overview

Fetal monitoring combines devices, consumables and clinical software sold to hospitals, maternity clinics and other care providers. High-risk pregnancy surveillance requires repeated assessment of fetal well-being, creating demand for connected systems that extend specialist oversight beyond scheduled hospital visits.

Hospitals remain the main buyers of fetal monitoring technology, while home-care applications are a growing segment. Wireless sensing and remote data review can extend existing maternity services into the home. Purchasing decisions include signal reliability, clinical integration and the recurring costs of monitoring.

Wireless fetal monitoring

Monica Healthcare

Acquired by GE Healthcare in 2017

Monica Healthcare developed wireless maternal and fetal monitors. Its Novii patch measures maternal heart rate, fetal heart rate and uterine activity while allowing women to move during labour. GE Healthcare acquired Monica Healthcare in March 2017, following its role as exclusive North American distributor of the Novii Wireless Patch System.

Remote fetal monitoring

Sense4Baby

Assets acquired by AirStrip in 2014

Sense4Baby developed a smartphone-based wireless maternal and fetal monitoring system for non-stress testing in high-risk pregnancies. AirStrip acquired Sense4Baby’s assets in March 2014 and separately licensed the associated technology from the West Health Institute.
