Developing automated blood-based genomic tests for lung cancer

Cancer ScreeningMolecular DiagnosticsPoint-of-care Diagnostics

Genomic cancer testing can help clinicians identify mutations and select treatments, but specialist equipment, laboratory expertise and long turnaround times limit access. Faster blood-based testing could make repeated cancer assessment more practical in routine care.

Biomarx is developing automated blood tests to make lung cancer detection and monitoring faster and more accessible. Its platform is designed to give care teams genetic information from a small blood sample without a specialist sequencing laboratory.

Product

Biomarx combines sample extraction, and electrochemical biosensors in an automated platform. The first test is being developed for , using to support detection, monitoring and treatment stratification.

Automated sample preparation

The platform integrates extraction of genetic material from a blood sample into a sample-to-answer workflow. Automation is intended to reduce manual handling and the specialist skills needed to prepare samples for genomic testing.

Isothermal target amplification

Proprietary isothermal amplification increases the amount of target genetic material at a constant temperature. This approach is intended to simplify the equipment needed before the amplified material reaches the detection stage.

Electrical genetic-signal detection

Electrochemical biosensors read the amplified genetic signal electrically. Biomarx targets results in under two hours at around £70 per test, with an initial research-use-only release followed by development toward clinical diagnostic use.

Market Overview

Liquid biopsy suppliers sell test kits, instruments and laboratory services to hospitals, diagnostic laboratories and research organizations. Blood-based analysis supports cancer detection, therapy selection and repeat monitoring, creating demand for reliable molecular results with shorter turnaround times.

The early-detection and monitoring segment includes both centralized sequencing services and simpler near-patient platforms. Hospitals and laboratories evaluate clinical utility, workflow fit and reimbursement when adopting tests; repeat monitoring creates demand for consumables as well as analytical equipment.
