Developing 3D ultrasound to assess tumour margins during cancer surgery
Surgeons cannot always confirm that all cancer has been removed during an operation. Analysis of removed tissue can take one to two weeks. Uncertainty about remaining cancer can lead to repeat surgery and additional treatment, increasing the burden on patients and healthcare services.
3Sonic is developing a system that combines 3D ultrasound with AI to assess removed tumour tissue in the operating room. Its functional imaging prototype is intended to help surgeons assess margins and decide whether more tissue needs removing.
