5 Early-Stage Health Startups Led by Founders With Previous Exits
DealBio tracks early-stage health startups across Europe and North America. These 5 are led by founders who have already experienced a previous business exit, from selling a specialist clinic to building biotech and consumer platforms that were acquired.

A prior exit can be useful founder evidence because it shows experience with parts of the company-building cycle that first-time teams may not yet have faced. Depending on the venture, that can include fundraising, hiring, product delivery, strategic partnerships, clinical development and negotiating an acquisition.
The signal still needs context. Selling a clinic is different from taking a biotech platform into clinical studies, and a consumer-platform acquisition does not validate a new medical product. Across this group, the useful question is what operating experience from the earlier venture can transfer into the next one.

Why Anorit Medical stands out
Anorit Medical is building a one-button ventilation device for the minutes before emergency services arrive. The startup has secured €500,000 through BioInnovation Institute Venture Lab and a DKK 4.7 million Innovation Fund Denmark Innobooster grant, while prototype testing with more than 40 first-aid instructors produced strong usability and confidence scores.
The previous-exit signal comes from co-founder Minik Nørreslet, who founded an osteopathy clinic and sold it in 2024. That is a smaller-scale exit than the venture-backed transactions elsewhere in this article, but it still gives the team direct experience building and transferring ownership of a healthcare service business.
What Anorit Medical is building
Anorit Medical is developing a reusable automatic ventilation device that a bystander places over a person's mouth during cardiac arrest. Pressing one button delivers a controlled volume of air, while only the patient-contact components are replaced after use.
The device is designed to work alongside chest compressions and defibrillation. The product thesis is to make ventilation more accessible to an untrained first responder without requiring mouth-to-mouth or operation of a bag-valve mask.

Why Kopra Bio stands out
Kopra Bio, a Y Combinator startup, combines a $9.1 million seed round with preclinical evidence in glioblastoma. Its underlying research reported more than 90% long-term survival in treated mice, and the startup is using a replicating retrovirus to turn tumor cells into a local source of immune stimulation.
CEO Andrew Bartynski previously co-founded ANA Therapeutics as COO, raised more than $6 million and helped secure FDA clearance to begin its COVID-19 trial within six months of formation. NeuroBo Pharmaceuticals acquired ANA in 2020, after which Bartynski spent 21 months at NeuroBo working on regulatory filings and clinical trial design.
What Kopra Bio is building
Kopra Bio is developing an intratumoral viral immunotherapy for solid tumors, beginning with glioblastoma. Its replicating retrovirus spreads through dividing cancer cells and makes them produce an IL-15 superagonist.
That local-production model is intended to recruit T cells and natural killer cells inside the tumor while limiting broad systemic exposure. Kopra Bio plans to establish the platform in glioblastoma before expanding into other solid tumors.

Why Mito Health stands out
Y Combinator-backed Mito Health reported passing one million lab tests in July 2026 and now serves all 50 US states through partner laboratories. Its membership model gives customers at-cost pricing on tests while results feed longitudinal tracking and personalized preventive-health guidance.
Co-founder Kenneth Lou previously built Seedly past 1.1 million monthly users before its 2018 acquisition by ShopBack. He continued running the business inside its acquirers until 2022, giving Mito Health a founder with experience scaling a consumer platform, navigating acquisition and operating within larger organizations.
What Mito Health is building
Mito Health is a direct-to-consumer platform for lab tests, medical scans and at-home kits. Customers can order individual tests or personalized panels, while members pay at-cost pricing and receive ongoing guidance based on their results.
Every order is reviewed and signed by a physician in Mito Health's network. Results feed personalized action plans, longitudinal tracking and AI-supported guidance, with clinician consultations available when needed.

Engineering probiotics that reduce low-grade gut inflammation for metabolic health.

Why 1stBiome stands out
1stBiome entered BioInnovation Institute Venture Lab with €500,000 in financing and is developing engineered probiotics for metabolic health, weight management and healthy ageing. Its platform grew out of DTU Biosustain research and is supported by preclinical evidence around metabolic and inflammatory effects.
Co-founder Morten Sommer previously co-founded Microlytic, which Anatrace acquired in 2015. He later co-founded several other biotech ventures, while CEO Ejner Bech Jensen previously co-founded Agrobiomics and led it through a €4 million seed round. That gives 1stBiome both exit experience and repeat company-building experience around industrial biotechnology.
What 1stBiome is building
1stBiome engineers beneficial gut microbes for oral nutritional products. Its lead work uses Saccharomyces boulardii, a probiotic yeast with established gastrointestinal use, as a platform for adding new functions in the gut.
The startup plans to commercialize through established consumer-health and nutrition partners rather than build a standalone consumer channel. The model places its technology between conventional probiotics and pharmaceutical microbiome therapeutics.

Why Circle Bio stands out
Circle Bio brings unusually direct prior-company experience into autoimmune CAR-T. Maarten Zandvliet and Tol Trimborn co-founded CellPoint, where the platform entered two Phase 1/2a studies before Galapagos acquired the startup for €125 million upfront plus up to €100 million in milestone payments.
That track record is relevant because Circle Bio is again working in CAR-T, but in autoimmune disease rather than cancer. The founders have already dealt with cell-therapy development, clinical translation and an acquisition in the same broad modality, making the prior exit more directly transferable than a general entrepreneurial credential.
What Circle Bio is building
Circle Bio is developing autologous CAR-T therapies for rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. The platform combines two validated targets with mild conditioning, lean automated processing and a digitally driven workflow.
The aim is to reset disease-driving immune activity after a single intervention while simplifying the treatment process for patients and clinicians. Circle Bio is applying lessons from oncology cell therapy to large autoimmune indications.

Investment perspective
Previous exits are most useful when they reveal how a founder has operated under pressure and what part of that experience carries into the new startup. Across this group, the evidence ranges from a healthcare-service sale at Anorit Medical to venture-backed acquisitions at Kopra Bio, Mito Health, 1stBiome and Circle Bio. The scale differs, so the signal should not be treated as interchangeable.
The strongest transfer is visible where the new venture reuses a capability the founder has already exercised. Circle Bio's founders have already taken CAR-T programs into clinical development and through an acquisition. Kopra Bio's Andrew Bartynski has already raised biotech capital and worked through regulatory and clinical development. Mito Health can draw on Kenneth Lou's consumer-platform scaling and post-acquisition operating experience, while 1stBiome combines a prior biotech exit with repeated venture formation.
For investors, a previous exit can strengthen confidence around fundraising credibility, hiring, strategic networks and commercialization judgment. It cannot substitute for evidence that the new product works or that the new market is attractive. The more useful diligence question is therefore not simply whether a founder has exited before, but whether the earlier journey built capabilities that matter for the next value-creating milestone.
Methodology
DealBio selected these five early-stage health startups because at least one founder has a previous exit explicitly supported by the current live Startup Brief. The selection spans different exit types and health categories so the founder-track-record signal can be compared in context rather than treated as a single credential.
DealBio builds its Startup Briefs using publicly available startup materials, ecosystem sources, market references and professional profiles.
