Brain-health innovation is not one product category. A blood test, a consultation-analysis system and a cognitive-scoring tool may all support assessment, but they measure different signals and have different clinical claims. A wearable instrument used in neuroscience research faces a different path to adoption again.

Therapeutic development poses another set of questions. Identifying a disease-related target, protecting neurons or advancing a brain-cell model can strengthen the rationale for treatment, but preclinical evidence cannot substitute for efficacy in patients.

The nine startups illustrate this division clearly. Five focus on testing, clinical assessment or research measurement; four pursue therapeutic development. Together, they show progress toward more informative measurement and more precisely defined intervention, without implying that the products are linked into a single pathway.

Why Brainalyze stands out

Brainalyze is tackling a specific clinical question: determining which underlying condition may be responsible for symptoms. Its working MX-Raman prototype and precursor spectroscopy studies provide a technical starting point, but the studies are not a prospective validation of the proposed blood test. One precursor study reported 93% accuracy for Alzheimer's classification in a held-out set of 28 cerebrospinal-fluid samples; a separate study used post-mortem brain spectra. Those sample types and evaluation settings matter when assessing how well the approach might translate to routine blood testing.

What Brainalyze is building

The startup is developing a laser-based blood test that captures biochemical patterns rather than relying on a single disease marker. Its intended use is differentiation of dementia causes to support earlier clinical investigation and more informed treatment decisions.

Why Herencia stands out

Herencia focuses on risk assessment at a stage when memory symptoms may not yet be apparent. Its ETH Zurich spinout origin and work with the University of Antioquia's genetic Alzheimer's cohort are meaningful research links. The evidence is best understood as clinical-method development, rather than proof that a stand-alone eye test can diagnose Alzheimer's disease.

What Herencia is building

Herencia is developing a non-invasive approach using pupil responses and decision behaviour to identify patterns associated with Alzheimer's risk. The intended opportunities include leaner assessment settings and selection for prevention research. Performance in the appropriate populations, and how risk estimates are communicated, will be central to clinical adoption.

Why neurodAIgnostics stands out

neurodAIgnostics combines academic neuroscience, AI expertise and early technical validation to address a time-consuming part of cognitive assessment. A 2024 study of the underlying research model achieved a mean absolute scoring error of 1.13 in independent prospective validation, providing an encouraging foundation for automated cognitive-test scoring.

The University of Zurich spin-off has also secured an Innosuisse grant for work with University Hospital Zurich and CSEM, and launched a Dutch-language assessment pilot with Kenniscentrum Revalidatiegeneeskunde Utrecht. Co-founder Nicolas Langer brings neuroscience research experience from Harvard Medical School, while Arnaud Bistoquet holds a PhD in machine learning for medical imaging from Georgia Tech. Together, these signals point to a research-backed technology moving toward practical clinical use.

What neurodAIgnostics is building

neurodAIgnostics is developing AI software that converts photographs of completed paper-based cognitive tests into suggested scores and structured reports. By preserving familiar assessments while automating parts of the scoring and documentation process, the technology aims to reduce clinicians' administrative workload, improve consistency and free up more time for patient assessment.

The investment opportunity lies in making established cognitive-testing workflows more efficient without requiring clinicians to abandon the tools they already use.

Why optohive stands out

optohive belongs in a different purchasing and evidence category from clinical diagnostics. Its research-use-only HiveOne platform secured confirmed six-figure research-system orders and a distribution agreement with ANT Neuro. Those are early commercial indicators tied to scientific equipment rather than treatment or diagnosis. The system originated at ETH Zurich's Rehabilitation Engineering Lab.

What optohive is building

optohive is developing HiveOne, a wearable optical brain-imaging system that allows researchers to measure brain activity while participants move and perform tasks in more natural environments. Unlike conventional laboratory setups that restrict movement, HiveOne is designed to make brain imaging more flexible and accessible across different research settings.

The system enables neuroscience teams to investigate brain function during real-world activities and collect measurements across repeated sessions, opening new possibilities for studying cognition, behaviour and how the brain responds to different tasks and environments.

Why Cellestial Health stands out

Cellestial Health targets astrocyte communication networks rather than focusing solely on neurons. It secured £515,000 in pre-seed equity financing in May 2025, while 2025 human post-mortem tissue research found reduced connexin 43 in late-stage Parkinson's cases. A separate 2026 cell-and-rat study reported effects on inflammation and pathology; neither result establishes patient treatment efficacy.

What Cellestial Health is building

The startup develops small molecules intended to preserve astrocyte-network communication in Parkinson's disease. Its thesis is that improving the environment around vulnerable neurons could contribute to a disease-modifying treatment strategy.

Why CicaNeuro stands out

CicaNeuro has preclinical Parkinson-like animal-model evidence reporting protection of vulnerable neurons and improved motor performance. Its lead programme is supported by exclusive patent licences from the Paris Brain Institute, including rights associated with CN101.

What CicaNeuro is building

CicaNeuro is developing small-molecule medicines designed to protect neurons and slow the degeneration associated with Parkinson's disease. Unlike Cellestial Health's support-cell strategy, its programme centers on neuronal protection.

Why Cerebrovia Therapeutics stands out

Persistent symptoms following concussion can affect day-to-day functioning long after the original injury. Cerebrovia Therapeutics is pursuing drug development for this particular patient group rather than a general neurodegenerative-disease programme. Its clinical-research and scientific-founder signals provide an early foundation for a differentiated therapeutic strategy.

What Cerebrovia Therapeutics is building

Cerebrovia Therapeutics is developing medicines for people experiencing persistent symptoms after a concussion. Its work focuses on the longer-lasting effects of brain injury, where symptoms can continue well beyond the initial recovery period and interfere with everyday activities.

The startup aims to develop treatments that address these ongoing symptoms and improve recovery and quality of life for people living with persistent post-concussion difficulties.

DealBio helps investment teams discover, research, and monitor early-stage healthcare and life sciences startups aligned with their investment criteria.

Investment perspective

Brain health is increasingly moving beyond broad approaches to neurological disease toward technologies designed around more specific biological processes, clinical decisions and unmet patient needs. This shift reflects a fundamental challenge in the field: neurological conditions are complex, symptoms often overlap, and existing methods do not always capture the changes that matter most for diagnosis, research or treatment.

One important development is the growing effort to make brain health measurable in more practical ways. Advances in AI, molecular analysis and non-invasive sensing are creating opportunities to capture information that previously required specialist interpretation, expensive infrastructure or lengthy assessment processes. As these technologies become easier to integrate into established workflows, they could support earlier intervention, more consistent monitoring and more efficient clinical research.

A parallel shift is taking place in therapeutics. Rather than focusing exclusively on managing symptoms, emerging approaches increasingly investigate the cellular dysfunction and biological pathways involved in neurological conditions. Better disease models and more precise understanding of these mechanisms could help identify promising drug candidates earlier and guide the development of more targeted treatments.
